While we are sleeping, bombs are going off in Baghdad. Another grisly chapter is being written in the history of the world with the naïve idea that we are going to walk into that country on the other side of the world, and show them how everything is done. Call it the fifth fucking crusade to take back the Promised Land, the cradle of civilization, where all the oil is. Shakespeare, you got nothing on the ironies of history.

So for every innocent victim who gets splattered by an M-16 or a Hellfire missile, we create more support for the insurgency we're trying to quell. Kentucky-fried Iraqi Babies are more persuasive than any abstract idea about "democracy" in that destroyed country. Unless someone gets really creative, we've already lost the war. In another year (maybe less) we'll be fighting the whole country. Even if the draft were reinstated, we'd be hard pressed to stay. Training draftees for deployment will take at least 3-4 months. At the rate things are deteriorating, that is way too long, and the election is still a month away. We're not gonna be able to shoot ourselves out of this one.

With the exception of the English in the Boer war, no conventional army has ever successfully put down a guerilla force. Why should we think we are any different? We've already failed many times, or at best declared a truce and lost half a country. It's gonna be tough going, no question. And for what? So the president can get his revenge, his dick hard, and some oil? Not that I need to tell you, but it is all so absurd.

So now it is 3AM in San Francisco. It's 3PM in Iraq. Someone is sweating in the dust and loading up their AK-47 or M-4. Blood flows through their eyes. We're asleep waiting for the morning CNN to tell us about another fucked up day in Baghdad, where one of them set off a bomb or shot some insurgents. The ammo companies must be making a lot of money right now. It's a perverse TV show of foreign policy, scratched into the annals of humanity. No wonder most historians are obsessed with war.

I'm going to bed. Try to sleep well…
